From a young age, Hanna Steinmüller has been committed to social justice and the environment. She was a member of the BUND-Youth, offered consumer-critical tours for the JANUN e. V. in Hanover, and was an activist against food waste. After graduating from high school, she worked with young adults receiving social security benefits. She then studied social sciences at Humboldt University of Berlin to more deeply explore societal participation, powers, and inequality.
She joined Alliance 90/The Greens in 2015 and was managing director and campaign manager of a party district chapter from 2015 to 2017. She was elected to the state party’s executive committee in 2016. In 2019, she stood as a candidate for the European elections. Additionally, she was spokesperson for the state party’s health and social affairs working group from 2019 to 2021. In April 2020, she was elected as a member of the Berlin-Mitte district assembly.
In the 2021 federal election to the 20th German Bundestag, she won the Berlin-Mitte constituency directly, becoming a member of parliament. She was selected as her parliamentary group’s rapporteur on housing policy and became a member of the Committee on Housing, Urban Development, Building and Local Government.
In 2025 she was reelected to the Bundestag in the Berlin-Mitte constituency, again winning the mandate directly. In the 21st German Bundestag, she remains rapporteur on housing policy and now additionally serves as group coordinator for her parliamentary group in the housing committee. She continues to fight for affordable, ecological housing, and better tenant protection.
